What is PBX in VoIP?

PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. A PBX is a software or hardware solution to route calls within a private network. It defines the extensions of every phone on your network and assigns phone numbers.

PBXs include manual switchboards used in the 40s and 50s and new software solutions that run on a PC, like FreePBX. They manage registration to a service provider, route calls, and manage all features.
