Router Definition: What is a Router & How Does It Work?

A router is a device whose purpose is to route information between devices on an internal network. It also routes information to the modem, and then the internet.

Most routers today also provide IP addresses to network devices using dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) services.

Your router can also provide a wireless connection to the network using Wi-Fi. Many routers include at least a rudimentary firewall for network protection.
