With an estimated population of 361,000 people, Wichita is the largest city in Kansas. It covers 163 square miles in the central part of the state and is the seat of Sedgwick County. However, area code 316 will give you access to parts of Harvey and Butler counties as well. A Wichita area code is a great place to start in the state because it sits 160 miles from Topeka and 215 miles from Kansas City.
Wichita was founded in 1868 and incorporated in 1870. The city is named after the Wichita Tribe who was originally settled in the area. It’s location on the Chisholm Trail, which connected Texas to the rest of the US, made Wichita a cattle hub in the area and helped the economy grow.
A land boom in the 1880’s increased the population as well, and in the early 1900’s oil and natural gas were found in the area. This second boom helped start a major aircraft industry in the state and other businesses expanded along with it. After decades of steady growth, Wichita sits prominently as the largest city in Kansas and the 48th largest in the United States.
