With an estimated population of 208,000 people, Tacoma is the third largest city in the state of Washington. It covers 62 square miles along the Puget Sound. Tacoma is the seat of Pierce County, and area code 253 includes the cities of Gig Harbor, Kent, University Place, Roy, Edgewood, and more as well. Due to its proximity only 32 miles from the city, Tacoma is a satellite of Seattle and sits only 31 miles from the state capital of Olympia as well.
The city of Tacoma was incorporated in 1875. It experienced a significant population boom in the 1880’s when it was connected as the final stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Unfortunately, the city suffered during the Great Depression and didn’t begin to recover until the 1990’s when Tacoma went through an urban revitalization project with the construction of new museums and the University of Washington Tacoma Campus. Now, it sits comfortably as the 3rd largest city in Washington and the 104th largest in the United States.
